An Alabama man who died of COVID early Wednesday morning in Mobile leaves behind a “devastatingly heartbroken” wife who is eight months pregnant with their second child.

Kent Bailey, a former University of South Alabama cheerleader and cheerleading coach, was on a ventilator in the ICU at Providence Hospital, where he was battling COVID, died, his wife, Halley Bailey, announced on social media.

“This is the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to do. At 6:00 AM this morning my husband, my best friend, the love of my life, the father of my daughters, and the most amazing blessing of my life left this world and woke up in the precious arms of our Lord and savior,” Halley Bailey wrote on her Facebook page. Please be in prayer for our family for the hours, days, weeks, months, and years to come. Please pray for our 4-year-old daughter. I pray that she understands when we tell her. I am devastatingly heartbroken, but God is still good. He is still on His throne. And He is with us. I will give him all the praise, glory, and honor because: ‘All my life you have been faithful. All my life you have been so so good. With every breath that I am able, I will sing of the goodness of God.’”

Kent Bailey was diagnosed with COVID pneumonia Aug. 3, his wife said.

Tributes to Kent Bailey poured in on his Facebook page, where family, friends and cheerleaders he coached sent their condolences.

“Heaven got one of the best today,” one Facebook friend said.

”Thank you for being the best coach and never giving up on me, for being so patient, and getting me to where I am today. I definitely couldn’t have done it without you. My heart is so broken, I can’t believe this is real,” another wrote. “Please keep everyone effected in your thoughts and prayers, especially his family. If I’ve learned anything this past month, it’s to not take any time spent with someone for granted, but I will always have peace in my heart knowing Kent is no longer in pain and rejoicing with the Lord.”

“Kent was the best.. kent was the type of guy that 15+ years later makes sure to text you on your birthday no matter where he was.. he would give his shirt off his back to anyone in need, and I mean that literally, as ive seen it happen,” said a third. “his laugh was absolutely infectious.. kent is by far one of the best humans I’ve ever had the pleasure to know and call my friend.”
