ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan baseball team rode a strong pitching performance from Cameron Weston and a three-hit day from Riley Bertram to lead the Wolverines to a 7-0 shutout of visiting Ohio State on Saturday (April 10) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Going against OSU ace left-hander Seth Lonsway, Bertram gave Michigan a second-inning lead with a two-out single up the middle to score Benjamin Sems (single). Michigan continued to threaten, loading the bases, but Lonsway got Christian Molfetta swinging to end the threat with his fifth strikeout in the early going.
It was Bertram again in the fourth inning, launching a two-run double to the gap in left-center, scoring Sems (walk, stolen base) and Tito Flores (walk, stolen base). Bertram then stole third base and scored on a wild pitch to give the Wolverines a 4-0 lead. The tone was clear as an aggressive Michigan squad stole six bases in the first four innings.
Next, Bertram laced a double down the right-field line to lead off the sixth inning and scored when Molfetta drove a low-outside fastball over the right-field wall for a two-run homer and a 6-0 Michigan advantage.
The early runs were all that Weston (4-1) needed as the righty bested OSU's ace. The sophomore kept Ohio State off the board for 6.2 innings, scattering five hits while striking out five before departing after 101 pitches with a runner on first base. Will Proctor added 1.1 innings of hitless relief in another impressive outing from the graduate transfer from Georgia, while Blake Beers threw a scoreless ninth.
Bertram and Sems led an aggressive offensive with three and two hits, respectively. Each player stole two bases on the day for a Wolverines team that was a perfect 7-for-7 on stolen-base attempts.
Michigan and Ohio State complete their series Sunday (April 11) at noon at the Wilpon Complex in a game that will be streamed live on ESPN3. The game was originally scheduled for a 4 p.m. first pitch but was moved up due to expected inclement weather in Ann Arbor.
