At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic last March, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank partnered with Giant Eagle and media company Entercom for an all-day radiothon that wound up providing more than 1.5 million meals to the region.
Now, on the one-year anniversary of the pandemic, the food bank is once again partnering with the grocery chain and Entercom for a second Giant Eagle Feed the Need Radiothon to benefit the nonprofit, which annually distributes nearly 40 million meals annually across 11 counties in southwestern Pennsylvania.
Broadcasting from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, on KDKA 100.1 FM and AM 1020, 93.7 The Fan, 100.7 Star and Y108, the radiothon aims to support those in the region utilizing drive-up food distribution sites as well as food pantries. According to event officials, the pandemic has resulted in a 42 percent increase in food insecurity in the region.
President and CEO of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank Lisa Scales, Pittsburgh Magazine’s 2021 Pittsburgher of the Year, recalled in January’s feature story that she and her staff often worked 16-hour days, seven days a week, to find new ways to meet the drastic surge in need as the pandemic dragged on.
“We are grateful for the continued support of Entercom, especially during the pandemic over the past year,” she says. “There have been multiple fundraising and awareness initiatives we’ve partnered on that have helped us fulfill our mission including Feed the Need, Taste of Pittsburgh and the Spaghetti Breakfast just to name a few.”
The radiothon broadcasts live throughout March 16 and will feature hourly interviews and updates. Listeners are encouraged to donate online, via phone call or by text message.
Text donations may also be made before Tuesday by texting NEED to 50155 or visiting here. For more information, visit KDKARadio.com/feedtheneed.
