To the editor,
As we all know, the Fourth of July is just around the corner. And a lot of people like to celebrate with fireworks. But it’s sad that in North Carolina we are limited to certain kinds of fireworks. We cannot sell firecrackers, bottle rockets or any other types that leave the ground. But we can just drive south to South Carolina and buy all of the firewords that we are not allowed to sell here.
Instead of giving South Carolina our money that could be used in our state, there are two bills in the House and Senate that, if passed, would allow consumer fireworks in North Carolina.
• House Bill 615 and Senate Bill 566 would give counties and municipalities the option of legalizing fireworks.
• Safety pamphlets would be required with every purchase.
• Tax revenue from legalization will go towards firefighting training.
• The state fire marshal can prohibit the use of fireworks during periods of high fire danger.
• The firework injury rate dropped to its lowest level ever in 2018.
So if you would like to have these bills passed, please call of send an email to your senators and House representatives in Raleigh. Have a safe and happy Fourth!
