CONCORD

Meals on Wheels Diablo Region (MOWDR) has launched its “Feed the Soul Campaign” to provide Breakfast Bags to 4,600 vulnerable seniors in Concord.

CSAA Insurance Group, Chevron Corporation, NBC Bay Area, Telemundo 48, and Mount Diablo Resource & Recovery have signed on as sponsors to help raise $28,000 in 28 days throughout the month of February so seniors can receive a healthy breakfast every day.

MOWDR currently delivers one meal a day to seniors who are not able to prepare a meal. For many seniors, it is the only meal they eat all day. They often split the meal for lunch and dinner or save small amounts of food when taking their medication. But one meal is not enough. For food-insecure seniors, breakfast can make the difference between hunger and good health. MOWDR is pleased that its sponsors have stepped forward to join the community in helping vulnerable seniors.

Feed the Soul launched Feb. 1 and runs through the end of the month. To help MOW Diablo Region provide 4,600 breakfasts, please join our sponsors with your donation today by going online to mowdiabloregion.org/feed-soul.

County workers help provide residents over 130,000 meals

At a presentation during the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors meeting Feb. 9, the annual Counties Care Holiday Food Fight was recognized, and donation results were announced. County employees raised more than $67,000 to help provide more than 130,000 meals to benefit children, individuals and seniors through the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano.

Celebrating 17 years of friendly competition, the Contra Costa and Solano Counties’ Food Fight this year helped provide more than 220,000 meals for families and individuals in need. Since 2004, the two neighboring counties have raised more than $2.1 million to fight hunger, according to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano, which has seen demand for its services dramatically spike due to pandemic closures. If you need assistance with food resources and want to learn about volunteer opportunities, visit the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano at foodbankccs.org.

New ways offered to get families to essential destinations

Lyft Inc. has introduced new tools in Contra Costa County to help loved ones get to vaccine appointments and other essential destinations via Rides for Others and the Lyft Family pilot program. Rides for Others allows Lyft account holders to seamlessly call for rides for others, offering real-time pickup and dropoff notifications and ride tracking to make sure their riders arrive at their destinations.

Also, Lyft Family is a new function giving individuals the option to add family members to their Lyft account — offering families one central place to access real-time trip details, expense tracking, as well as options to call and pay for rides on their loved ones’ behalf. With families in the area physically distanced amid the pandemic and unable to offer transportation assistance, these new tools will allow individuals to call for rides for loved ones, such as parents or grandparents who may need transportation to places like vaccine centers, grocery stores or nonemergency medical care.
