Over the past few days, the impact of severe winter weather on the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex has been dramatic. Hundreds of thousands of people have been without heat or power for hours — or days — and others are struggling to get food, medicine, and other necessities as the sub-freezing temperatures and icy precipitation continue to linger.
The weather has been especially difficult for DFW’s unhoused population. The city has opened emergency shelters and warming centers to help unhoused people stay out of the cold, and the need will likely continue through the week. In response, a number of mutual aid collectives and grassroots organizations are working around the clock to house and feed people who are vulnerable to the cold, and they could definitely use your help.
Trying to figure out how you can help further this essential work? These mutual aid funds, nonprofits, and grassroots organizations are currently accepting donations for immediate needs like food and toiletries, and are also in search of volunteers who are willing and able to cook or transport meals. Feed the People Dallas — This Dallas-based mutual aid collective is currently accepting donations of cash and items like to-go containers, dried rice, beans, and other essential items for its food service programs. The organization is also looking for individuals who can help prepare and deliver food at home. Visit Feed the People’s Instagram account for more details, or purchase items from its Amazon wishlist.
Camp Rhonda — This encampment of unhoused people in Dallas is currently accepting donations of items like protein bars, snacks, and toiletries via its Amazon wishlist. The organization is also seeking volunteers who can prepare food at home and deliver meals. Those who are able to volunteer can contact Camp Rhonda organizers at 469.759.9764.
Funky Town Fridge — This community feeding program operates three community fridges across Fort Worth, and is always accepting donations of food, toiletries, and other essentials. Those who are in need can access the fridges at any time, and take what they need. Check out the organization’s food donation guidelines here, and send cash donations via CashApp to $funkytownfridge.
North Texas Food Bank — A massive food distribution network for local food pantries and other feeding organizations. Donate via the NTFB website.
Dallas Stops Evictions — This community organization is raising funds to purchase hotel rooms and hot meals for unhoused people in Dallas. Scope out the organization’s Instagram account for details on how to donate via CashApp, PayPal, and other payment platforms.
Lucha Dallas — A BIPOC-led organization working to hand out hot beverages, meals, and other supplies to unhoused people in Dallas. Donations are accepted via Venmo (luchadallas).
The Stewpot — A community feeding organization that operates year-round to provide meals to unhoused people who are sheltering at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Downtown Dallas. Donate via the Stewpot’s website.
Tarrant Area Food Bank — A massive food bank that serves residents of Fort Worth and other Tarrant County cities. Donate via the TAFB website.
