CHICOPEE — There was a lot of love in the parking lot at the Castle of Knights. There were also scores of cars, tractor trailers and volunteers as 800 families were offered boxes of food and essentials during a distribution by Price Right Marketplace, the Feed the Children organization and the Revival Time Evangelistic Center.
September is Defeat Hunger Month and hundreds of families in the greater Chicopee area will feel a little relief from the increase in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I love being able to serve families,”said Aaron Hazel, manager of events at Feed the Children. Hazel says that Price Rite Marketplace works with Feed the Children in the northeast markets by donating money and non-perishable food items. The Feed the Children organization holds distributions across the country.
Chicopee Mayor John Vieau said being able to feed 3,200 people “is just an incredible thing” during this time of uncertainty. “People are probably living day-to-day trying to figure out how to feed their families. To see one of our grocery stores here in the city step up to the plate and to provide food, books, and non-perishables to help you through this crisis is just what it’s all about, working together," Vieau said.
As Joe Allegro, senior director of corporate partnerships for Feed the Children said “16 million kids don’t know where their next meal is coming from.” He then exhorted the volunteers to “show them a lot of love.”
Each family received a 25-pound box of food; a 15-pound box of essentials including shampoo, conditioner, lotion and personal care items; and additional shelf-stable items provided by Price Rite. The Springfield-based Revival Time Evangelistic Center identified the families for participation.
Since the beginning of its partnership with Feed the Children in 2015, Price Rite has donated nearly 2 million pounds of food and essentials.
