Set to take the throne as Google's only streaming song service, YouTube Music is reportedly testing new recommendation filters.
Redditor interro-bang today claimed to have "just received a server update that has dramatically changed" their Android app's Home screen, adding tabs for Workout, Focus, Relax, and Commute. "Clicking these tabs completely alters the Home screen to reflect the selected activity," they wrote in a post, highlighting new personalized mixes and "a plethora" of other activities with their own playlists.
Want to get pumped while pumping iron? Need to chill out after a long day? Choose the right "mood" for the moment to filter the most appropriate songs, albums, playlists, and sections. "You'll remember Workout/Focus/etc. from when [Google] briefly tested them ages ago, then they disappeared," according to interro-bang, who noted they do not yet have the new personalized My Mixes feature. "Seems as though they greatly expanded them and now they're finally rolling it out."
Neither YouTube nor parent company Google immediately responded to PCMag's request for comment. It's unclear whether these four filters—Workout, Focus, Relax, Commute—are the only options, or if users can adapt the moods to fit their individual needs.
YouTube Music, scheduled to supplant Google Play Music next month, in June introduced collaborative playlists—a communal feature aimed at making the streaming platform more social. Not yet active, 9to5Google dug it up by visiting a Music playlist and tapping the pencil icon. Setup, the site said at the time, is similar to the main YouTube apps, with the choice to name playlists, add a description, and set privacy.
