It's been more than a decade since our nation's last EF-5 tornado tore through Moore.
One family who survived the storm says it destroyed their home and nearly everything in it. But inside, one of their few remaining possessions, they wrote a thank you note to David Payne for saving their lives.
“On May 20, 2013 I was in southwest Oklahoma City tracking another mile-wide EF-5 tornado as it came into Moore. I said this is May 3, 1999 all over again. It, it's almost going down the same street that it did before,” News 9’s Chief Meteorologist David Payne said.
There was a man just blocks away listening to News 9 on the radio. His story brought us back to Moore 11 years later.
Jerry and Sherri walked David Payne through what they experienced, and he shared his point of view on that day.
Jerry and Sherri held on to the book for more than a decade with a heartfelt message written inside to David Payne. “This book is one of the few things of ours that survived the May 20th, 2013 tornado. If God had not put you in that position, reporting the location of the tornado, my wife and I might not have survived. We have always credited you for saving our lives that day. We are forever grateful,” said Jerry.
