PHOENIX, Ariz. – In front of the energetic GCU Havoc student section, LMU men's basketball earned a road win on Wednesday night, defeating Grand Canyon, 69-65. The Lions held a double-digit lead, then used a second half comeback to earn the team's first road win of the year and GCU's first road loss of the season.
Cam Shelton opened the game with LMU's first four field goals as the Lions took a 12-9 lead at the 14:47 mark of the first.
After GCU scored five points in a row, the Lions responded with an 8-0 run of their own with layups by Lamaj Lewis and Shelton and capped with a three from Alex Merkviladze to put LMU back on top 24-18 with 6:35 on the clock.
The back-and-forth first half continued as the Antelopes came back within two. LMU responded with seven unanswered points sparked by a dunk and layup by Merviladze and ending in a three from Kwane Marble II. The Lions took a 36-28 lead into halftime.
Jalin Anderson's layup to open the second half gave LMU their first double-digit lead of the game. The Lions extended the lead to 12 as Shelton converted a four-point play with 10:47 remaining.
After that Shelton's made three and free throw, the Lions went on a five-plus minute scoreless drought in which GCU scored 13 unanswered to take a lead. The Lopes went on a 17-2 run, with only a Leaupepe dunk breaking up the run.
Leaupepe scored LMU's last 11 points to flip a three-point deficit into a four-point lead. Justin Ahrens knocked down a pair of free throws to make it a two-possession game and seal the victory with six seconds left.
Shelton finished with his third-consecutive 20-plus point game. He has made nine or ten field goals in each of those games and finished with a team-high 26 points on Wednesday.
Leaupepe scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half, making 6-of-9 field goals over the final 20 minutes.
Merkviladze grabbed a season-high six rebounds to lead the team and scored nine points.
The LMU defense held GCU to 27 percent (6-for-22) shooting from three and did not allow a field goal in the final 4:52 of the game.
With the win, LMU has won 6-of-7 games dating back to the Jamaica Classic.
The Lions will stay away from home and head to Las Vegas to face unbeaten Utah State Saturday at Mandalay Bay. The game will tip off at 9:30 PM with a pay-per-view web stream available online.
