Linton/HMB works to three-peat behind old but inexperienced roster - The Jamestown Sun

LINTON — The Linton/Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock Lions do not rebuild. They retool and will be doing just that as the team will replace the four seniors who graduated with six new seniors.

The six seniors — ShayLee Bosch, Paige Hulm, Gracie Schumacher, Emma Schick, Lacey Bosch and Kaylee Weninger — all have multiple years of experience playing under head coach Jaime Richter.

“ShayLee Bosch, this is her fourth year starting for me as a middle hitter, she’s going to be playing all the way around this year,” Richter said. “I think she is going to have a great year this year. Gracie Schumacher, she’s another one that’s been starting for me for three years now. She’s an amazing setter. I think those two are the two best at their positions this year.”

Last season, Bosch had 313 kills, three aces, 30 solo blocks and 19 assisted blocks. Schumacher had 35 kills, 1,149 set assists, 75 aces and 180 defensive digs.

One of the important things that Richter sees as a weakness for her team and something they need to work on is being more consistent.

“I feel like we can beat anybody in the state one day and the next day we could lose to anybody in the state in practice," Richter said. "So, it’s just getting their mental growth going and their experience, that will be a key to success for us this year.”

Bosch said her hopes for this season are for her and her teammates to continue to feed off of each other. Bosch and Schumacher know how to play well in the big moments as they both were named to the 2021 North Dakota Class B B Volleyball all-tournament team.

“I want us to make sure we’re playing as a team and move as one,” Bosch said. “I hope our chemistry is good like last year.”

The Lions are coming off their second consecutive state title and are trying to be the first team to three-peat since LaMoure from 2015-2017. The Lions won the 2021 state title with a sweep over the Northern Cass Jaguars.

Because the team is younger, Richter said she doesn’t feel as much external pressure to win the state title again. Despite that, she challenged her players over the summer to not be content and to keep working hard.

“Each day we go into practice and want to get better and keep working hard and we work on our competitiveness and make sure we are doing stuff to get better in practice,” Bosch said.

The Lions have been practicing for a few weeks and Richter said she has seen a different level of effort and attitude compared to the open gym workouts during the summer.

“This summer we had open gyms and there were a lot more balls dropping on the floor from just watching them,” Richter said. “But as soon as the season started this year their mindset is focused and they came in with great attitudes and they want to work hard. They want to work hard to get to the state tournament again this year and I can tell.”

Richter is looking for big seasons from other seniors and underclassmen who didn't get as much playing time as Schumacher and Bosch last year. She specifically highlighted senior Emma Shick, who will get some significant playing time after being stuck behind JayCee Richter and Teagan Scherr for her first three seasons.

“Lacey Bosch has also been doing good, our right-side hitter didn’t get a chance to play on the court last year, Kaylee Weininger, she’s just one of those kids that comes in with a lot of energy and does all the little things right for us and we’re excited to have her part of the team this year,” Richter said. “Emma Schick is another one that is going to be seeing some valuable minutes and very well-skilled and a great teammate. She played for me to come in and serve, she was one of the girls that came in and she served and made that big run when it was 16-20 when were down in that third set.”

The Lions make their way to the Northern Cass Tournament to open the season against Midway-Minto at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27.
