LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team fell in an early hole and could not recover, dropping a 79-58 contest to Nebraska on Tuesday night (Jan. 4) at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
U-M had four players in double figures in Emily Kiser (13), Maddie Nolan (11), Naz Hillmon (10) and Leigha Brown (10) but could not combat shooting just 36.7 percent (22-for-60) from the field. Nebraska shot 51.7 percent (30-for-58) and held a 42-34 advantage on the glass.
Michigan fell behind early as Nebraska scored the first four points and eight of the first 10 of the contest. The Huskers shot 64.3 percent (9-for-14) in the opening 10 minutes, taking a 19-8 lead after the first quarter.
Nebraska scored the first four points of the second quarter before a Hillmon free throw stemmed the tide for the Wolverines.
The Huskers grew their lead to as many as 15 in the second quarter before Michigan climbed back to within 11, 32-21, after scoring four straight from Hillmon and Brown. Nebraska scored the final basket of the second quarter, taking a 34-21 lead into the locker room.
Michigan struggled offensively in the first half, connecting on just 29.6 percent (8-for-27) of its shots from the field compared to a 51.7 percent showing (15-for-29) for the Huskers, who also held a 23-14 advantage on the glass.
U-M opened the third quarter on a 6-2 run on buckets from Kiser, Brown and Nolan to trim the Husker lead to single digits, 36-27, with 8:10 left in the quarter.
The Huskers countered with a 9-2 run to push its lead to 16, 45-29, for its largest advantage of the game to that point with just over five minutes remaining in the third.
Michigan ended the third quarter on a 6-0 run on buckets from Brown, Hillmon and Kiser, trying to keep the game in reach heading to the final 10 minutes with Nebraska up 53-41.
Hillmon scored the first bucket of the fourth to bring Michigan within 10, but Nebraska answered by scoring six of the next seven points to push the lead back to 15.
Michigan countered with a Nolan triple and Kiser layup in transition to once again bring Michigan within 10 before Nebraska had another answer with four straight points.
U-M had the lead down to 11 at the media timeout of the fourth quarter with 4:30 remaining but missed a triple the next time down the floor as Nebraska embarked on a 9-3 run en route to the win.
Michigan is back in action Sunday (Jan. 9), hosting Rutgers at Crisler Center. Tip is set for 2 p.m. The University of Michigan is requiring a proof of COVID-19 vaccination or negative-test protocol for indoor athletic events. [ U-M Vaccination Policy ]
