On Saturday, August 7, Blayne Penny, and his son Ace, faced off in a sweet corn eating contest at the Eden Prairie Lions Club Corn Feed.
The tradition returned under cloudy skies to Round Lake Park. The score for steamed cobs oozing butter? Six cobs working on seven for Blayne and three and one-half for Ace.
“We’ve been looking forward to it all week,” said Blayne Penny, a life-long Eden Prairie resident.
Begun in 1974, the Lions Club Corn Feed this year received its 3200 ears from Waconia. The cobs were freshly picked early Saturday morning.
Shortly thereafter they were steaming in their husks over 20 propane heated vats.
The ears were fewer this year because of concerns about the weather.
Uncooked sweet corn was also for sale by half or full dozens as well. The meal option at the event included either a hot dog or sloppy Joes with chips.
With 46,000 clubs and 1.35 million members, Lions International is the largest service club in the world.
The Eden Prairie chapter meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Camp Eden Wood at 6350 Indian Chief Road.
