Rangers’ come-from-behind win over Oakland highlighted by another quality start from Jordan Lyles - The Dallas Morning News

ARLINGTON — He began the season as pitch-limited participant in a tandem-starter arrangement. Now, Jordan Lyles rolls into the All-Star break as something of a workhorse.

On Friday, coming off the highest pitch total compiled by a Rangers starter this year, Lyles bounced back with six innings in a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Oakland. Lyles pitched six innings, giving him his fifth quality start in the last six outings. Since June 8, he has a 3.31 ERA in 35.1 innings. He had thrown 124 pitches last Saturday in Seattle to help save a depleted bullpen.

Over the last month, Lyles has adjusted to hitters on the fly, adding a two-seam fastball into right-handed hitters and adding a bit of horizontal movement to his slider. It’s allowed him to work the outside edge of the plate and get some swings and misses.

“It has served me well,” Lyles said.

On Friday, he kept the Rangers in the game long enough for the offense to finally come to life, if only for a brief moment. After holding the Rangers hitless for the first five innings, A’s starter Cole Irvin allowed an infield single to No. 8 hitter Eli White to start the sixth. It was the first of five singles for the team Friday, four of them in a five-batter span.

Six straight Rangers reached base to start the sixth, capped by a run-scoring single from Andy Ibañez and a two-run single from Adolis García. García now has 61 RBIs, most ever by a Rangers’ rookie before the All-Star break.

García struggled in June as pitchers seemed to adjust to him but has slashed .303/.361/.485/.840 since the first of June. Pitchers have adjusted to him. He’s now adjusted back. The ability to adjust quickly is another encouraging sign for the Rangers that García could have long-term staying power.

“It used to be a year or two before pitchers made an adjustment, but we’ve had to re-design how quickly it is before the league figures you out; now it’s more like 200 at-bats,” Woodward said. “I’ve seen two or three adjustments made to him. He’s being pitched in a lot more. But he’s adjusted to that.  He’s learned to take that away or stay through the middle of the field with it.”
