The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank will benefit from the second Feed the Need Radiothon, which is meant to help those in the region who are using drive-up food distribution sites and food pantries during the covid-19 pandemic.
Entercom, a leading media and entertainment company, is hosting the Giant Eagle Feed the Need Radiothon to benefit the Food Bank.
This year’s event will take place on the one-year anniversary of the Food Bank’s initial covid-19 response.
Last year’s radiothon provided over 1.5 million meals in the region.
The event will be broadcast Tuesday from 5 a.m. until 6 p.m on 100.1 FM and AM 1020 (KDKA-AM); 93.7 The Fan (KDKA-FM); 100.7 Star (WBZZ-FM); and Y108 (WDSY-FM).
During the radiothon, participating stations will broadcast live throughout the day, featuring hourly interviews and updates on the fundraising effort.
Listeners will be encouraged to donate online, over the phone or through text message.
People can also donate before the radiothon by texting NEED to 50155 or visiting the Food Bank’s website.
“We are excited to offer our support again this year with the help from tremendous partners,” said Michael Spacciapolli, Entercom Pittsburgh’s senior vice president and marketing manager. “Pittsburghers are there for each other when there is a need. Radio reaches into our community, and we want to use our voice to serve our great city.”
Entercom has teamed up with the food bank for multiple fundraising and awareness initiatives during the pandemic, including Feed the Need, Taste of Pittsburgh and the Spaghetti Breakfast, according to Lisa Scales. president and CEO of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
“We look forward to deepening our efforts alongside Entercom to combat food insecurity in our region,” she said.
The ongoing pandemic has spurred a 42% increase in food insecurity in the region. The food bank, with the help of local partners, provided about 37 million pounds of food to 11 counties in Southwestern Pennsylvania between March 16 and Dec. 31, 2020.
“As a food retailer and a Pittsburgh-based company, we have a particular passion for supporting the fight against food insecurity in our region,” Jannah Jablonowski, a Giant Eagle spokesperson, said. “We are pleased to once again partner with Entercom to support the incredible and important work of Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank as we all come together to help our neighbors in need have access to food during these difficult times.”
