Since the start of the school year, DeSoto ISD officials have made feeding students a priority — even as those students are learning from home during the coronavirus pandemic.
This week the Dallas Cowboys, with Dairy MAX and the insulated box brand Liviri, will be providing 70 coolers to the school district as it uses curbside meals to to combat hunger, DeSoto ISD said in a news release.
Cowboys mascot Rowdy and members of the Dallas Cowboys Rhythm & Blue Dancers will be at Frank D. Moates Elementary from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday to hand out meals to families.
Because more than 75 percent of students are learning virtually this school year, there is an increased need to provide students with meals they would otherwise be receiving on campuses, the district said, adding that this initiative helps the district provide meals twice a week to sustain students throughout the school day and over the weekend, when many students may have limited access to meals.
The coolers will help preserve the meals, which come with servings of milk, the district said.
