The Phillies played poor defense and had trouble keeping the ball in the yard in an ugly 14-1 loss to the New York Mets at Citi Field on Sunday afternoon.
Phillies pitching was tagged for 17 hits, including five homers.
The Phillies' bats responded with just four hits.
The defeat marked the first time since August 21-22 that the previously red-hot Phillies have lost two in a row.
A projected pitchers' duel between Aaron Nola and Jacob deGrom never materialized. DeGrom, who has won the last two NL Cy Young awards, held the Phils to three hits and a run over seven innings. He walked two and struck out 12.
DeGrom has not given up more than two earned runs in 11 straight starts.
The loss dropped the Phillies to 19-17 with 24 games remaining. The Phils entered the day two games behind first-place Atlanta in the NL East.
Nola's day
He did not pitch badly at all. Three of the runs he allowed were unearned after a pair of infield errors (by Alec Bohm and Rhys Hoskins) and another Mets run scored on an outfield misplay by Adam Haseley. Nola allowed two of the Mets' three homers, both solos, but could not pitch over them because of the poor defense.
Hot stuff
Nola had very good stuff as evidenced by 10 strikeouts. He threw 32 changeups and got a swing and miss on 10 of them. He had 18 swings and misses in all.
DeGrom's stuff was absolutely electric. His fastball averaged 98.6 mph and topped out 100.8 mph. He had an amazing 35 swings and misses, including 19 on his slider and 11 on his fastball.
Where's the D?
The Phillies played bad defense.
Bohm's error in the fourth, on a botched rundown, eventually cost Nola two runs. Hoskins' error led to a run in the fifth. Haseley's misplay led to a run in the first inning. The Mets scored seven runs in the eighth inning. Left fielder Andrew McCutchen appeared to misplay a ball in that inning.
Knapp time
J.T. Realmuto got the day off. Andrew Knapp got the start behind the plate and continued to swing a potent bat in his limited time.
Knapp provided the Phillies with their only run when he drove a 98-mph fastball from deGrom over the wall in left.
Knapp is 12 for 26 (.462) on the season.
Hairy situation
Slumping Bryce Harper, who was ejected from Saturday night's game, showed up to the game with a new look. The long mane of hair that he arrived with in spring training had been cut. Harper had one of the Phillies' three hits.
Transactions
The Phillies placed outfielders Jay Bruce and Roman Quinn on the injured list before the game.
Up next
The series concludes Monday afternoon with Zack Wheeler (4-0, 2.20) opposing lefty David Peterson (4-1, 3.03).
