EVANSVILLE, Ind. — United Way of Southwestern Indiana's Day of Caring moved to a virtual platform this year but still highlighted the importance of community impact through volunteerism.
This year, the event was called "Day of Sharing" with the theme: “What we do together today, determines tomorrow. Now, more than ever, Live United."
The message is a call to help those in need to rebuild a brighter tomorrow.
Mayor Lloyd Winnecke said the recipients of the 2020 McGary Jones Visionary & Humanitarian Award, Lisa Vaughan and Alex Burton, exemplified that message through their actions.
Vaughan and Burton created Feed Evansville, a program that has been ensuring families in the Evansville community would not go hungry during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Feed Evansville identified a gap in our community's food security,” Winnecke said. “Lisa and Alex truly embody the spirit of the award's namesakes. They created and executed a strong community vision, while simultaneously supporting all of Evansville’s citizens in the most humanitarian manner.”
Burton and Vaughn both expressed gratitude at receiving the award and said they are determined to continue their work.

The award, named for both the City of Evansville’s founder, Hugh McGary, Jr. and retired bank executive Bob Jones, was established to honor special citizens who offer distinguished service for the advancement of the city and region.
The Facebook event also marked the start of the annual United Way campaign fundraisers which supports local nonprofits.
The 2019 campaign raised over $4 million which was used largely to fund programs and services that benefitted youth success, access to health and helping people in the community reach finical stability.
This year, organizers are urging that the need in the community is even greater due to COVID-19.
Winnecke said United Way has been at the forefront of addressing the challenges people are facing due to the pandemic. Now, more than ever, the organization needs donations, he said.
This year features a social media competition where prizes will be awarded to posts that include the oldest Day of Caring picture, the oldest Day of Caring shirt, the biggest Day of Caring T-shirt stash and the most inspirational story.
Prizes include gift cards to local establishments. There will also be a drawing with one donor receiving $10,000.
