The Kansas City Chiefs are getting ready to face the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium in Week 2. When the Chiefs last faced the Chargers, they had a different starting quarterback and played in a different stadium.
To learn more about Kansas City’s opponent, we spoke with managing editor Gavino Borquez over at Chargers Wire and asked him a few questions.
Chiefs Wire: There’s a new starting quarterback in L.A. with Tyrod Taylor, what are some of the changes that Chiefs fans can expect to see from the offense with Taylor under center?
Joseph Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports
Gavino Borquez: The Chargers will boast a new scheme that the Chiefs have yet to see from the team. There will be zone reads and other option runs. Expect a higher rate of play-action, including regularly from under center. Wide zone runs and wide zone play actions will be quite common, too. Los Angeles wasn’t doing this stuff with Philip Rivers as their quarterback. He preferred shotgun and wasn’t designed to run play action. This is an offense that will depend on the running game.
Chiefs Wire: The injury bug didn’t stay away from the Chargers for too long. What gives? Are the Chargers actually cursed or is there something more behind this wave of injuries over the years?
Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports
Gavino Borquez: I wish I knew the actual reasoning behind the injuries, but it’s very unfortunate. Los Angeles lost a few players who would’ve been key in this game — safety Derwin James, linebacker Drue Tranquill and center Mike Pouncey. We will find out if the Chargers have enough reinforcements to get the job done in their absences.
Chiefs Wire: Who are some of the new faces on the Chargers who could have an impact on the outcome of this game?
Joseph Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports
Gavino Borquez: On the offensive side of the ball, rookie running back Joshua Kelley is a guy to keep an eye on. The Chargers are going to run the ball a lot more than they have done in the past, and Kelley proved that he’s capable of producing, having ran for 60 yards and a score on 12 carries in Week 1. Paving the way for him will be right tackle Bryan Bulaga, who was solid last Sunday. On the other side, free agent acquisitions defensive tackle Linval Joseph and cornerback Chris Harris Jr. along with first-round pick linebacker Kenneth Murray will be critical to slowing the Chiefs’ dynamic offense.
Chiefs Wire: Do you think playing at SoFi stadium without any fans will give the Chargers any sort of advantage in Week 2?
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports
Gavino Borquez: *Cue the jokes about the Chargers not having fans.* Given the fact that the Chargers are still in a phase of building up a fanbase in Los Angeles, I don’t think it would have made a difference because the majority of the seats would have been flooded with red. The Bolts may have an advantage, only because the crew at SoFi Stadium will have noises in favor of the Chargers throughout the duration of the game.
Chiefs Wire: What’s your scoring prediction for this week? Do you think the Chargers can somehow get a win over Kansas City?
Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports
Gavino Borquez: The Chiefs have some injuries of their own, but they will be too much for the Chargers, especially after the hit they took. Kansas City’s offense and defense should dominate, leaving Los Angeles with no way to counter. Chiefs 28, Chargers 17.
