ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - It’s a program to make sure no families in Anchorage go hungry. It’s also a community effort in part driven by lots of volunteers. Located inside the old Sam’s Club Warehouse, volunteers are busy sorting, packing, labeling and loading hundreds of pantry packs to feed families in Anchorage. Each box is filled with non-perishable food items.

“It’s one person at a time and one donation at a time, one volunteer at a time, so we’re really happy to have some of our volunteers back with us,” said Lisa Sauder, CEO of Bean’s Cafe and The Children’s Lunchbox.

Volunteers like Amanda Lindquist who help on a weekly basis with her church build boxes for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

“You just never know when you’re going to be in a hard time and so to be able to give while able is one of the amazing things,” said Lindquist.

“There are many families that are struggling and need support right now and this was an easy way for us to do it in supplement to our prepared child meals that we already offer,” added Sauder.

The goal is to distribute 50,000 and no one is turned away.

“What we realized immediately with the start of Covid that it wasn’t just the child that was really struggling and this is an expansion of a program we started last year that we serve with our elementary schools that we serve weekend food, we added the pantry program because we found that one bag of food for a family for a weekend wasn’t enough,” said Sauder.

“It’s just really neat to come together of all generations and to do some service and good work in our community,” explained Lindquist.

So far, The Children’s Lunchbox has passed out more than 9,300 boxes and continues to pass out several hundred each week to locations all over the city.
