St. Joseph Diner, which recently announced expansion of its program to provide meals to those in need, now is seeking volunteers to meet the demand.

The diner, located at 405 St. John St., provides meals daily to anyone who is hungry. More than 100,000 meals are shared each year at the diner.

Recently, a partnership between Catholic Charities of Acadiana, Second Harvest Food Bank and New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees announced expansion of the diner’s capacity to provide meals.

“With this investment, we’re going to grow that [current] cooking capacity roughly seven times over,” Catholic Charities of Acadiana spokesman Ben Broussard said

He said through this partnership, St. Joseph Diner has invested in appliances and making the space at the diner a “machine” for churning out meals and preparing them to be distributed or flash frozen for people to eat in the future.

He said Second Harvest and Brees want to grow this program to reach children, senior and those who are shut-in.

“This is an essential service that’s being provided for the community,” he said. “It doesn’t get more essential in terms of human need than being a part of a team that’s cooking meals and putting meals directly into the community.”

In March, Broussard said the diner suspended volunteers because of COVID-19 and replace them with full-time employees.

“Now we are finally in a position where we need them [volunteers] again,” Broussard said, “and we need them five days a week for the foreseeable future.”

A total of 20 volunteers will be needed Monday through Friday. Shifts are broken down into a morning and an afternoon shift of 10 volunteers each.

Face masks are mandatory for all volunteers and temperature checks are enforced upon arriving to the diner. Broussard said volunteers will work at a safe social distance in the diner.

According to Catholic Charities of Acadiana, volunteers will assist with food and meal preparation under the supervision of kitchen staff. Tasks volunteers might help with include packing food and drink items, making sandwiches, plating and packing meals, cleaning or washing dishes.
