What’s behind the Ben Roethlisberger haircut hate? It symbolizes something much bigger - PennLive

krotoson.blogspot.com

So Big Ben’s supposedly illegal lockdown haircut and beard trim caused his many haters to lose their minds. LOL!

Yes, I’m looking at you Gov. Tom Wolf -- aka just another obnoxious Philly Eagles fan, I’m I right?

Wolf howled over Big Ben’s long-overdue trimming of his curly locks and bushy beard amid the governor’s coronavirus lockdown. And Wolf is far from the only one.

But what’s the real reason all those Big Ben’s haters pounced on his much-needed attempt to tidy up his appearance?

I give you all the best takedowns on the misguided Big Ben barber brouhaha -- and the gathering Steelers storm led by a rising Roethlisberger who seems ready to roll -- in this comeback edition of the Steelers Update Podcast. It’s freshly combed and groomed for your approval!

Or simply click and listen right here, right now:

I submit the outsized Roethlisberger haircut reaction stems more from the fear induced by the slim, trim and seemingly recovered quarterback that Ben’s barbering revealed in his slick video. It seems to signal that a major Steelers’ comeback awaits.

In short, a shorn Ben and his groomed Steelers look ready to roar.

Yes when it comes to roaring, Ben is a veritable ‘lion in winter’ at age 38 and coming off elbow surgery. His bushy beard and unkempt appearance combined to make him look overweight and over the hill, to boot. Jay Glazer’s pointed remarks about Big Ben’s lazy beer workouts didn’t help much, pushing some Pittsburgh fans into panic mode over Ben’s NFL readiness -- or lack thereof.

Funny how that haircut, performed so expertly by Carlos Norman, owner of Norman’s Cuttin’ Edge Barber Shop outside of Pittsburgh, changed the entire Steelers Nation narrative.

No, I am not talking about Gov. Wolf bashing Big Ben’s barbering, sans social distancing. In fact, the salon owner ended up dunking on the tisk-tisking governor in a pitch-perfect statement that had all of Steelers Nation in the hair-cutter’s corner. Lockdown-loving Wolf was howling in the wind on this one, especially in western Pa.

The Big Ben hate goes well beyond his lockdown haircut and dates long before COVID-19. It reached a crescendo in the national media when receiver Antonio Brown trashed the quarterback who helped make the former 6th-round receiver a NFL superstar. Even after Antonio revealed himself to be simply certifiable, the cable sports blabbermouths didn’t have the class to give Big Ben an overdue apology. Instead, they doubled down, peddling rumors that Roethlisberger pulled strings forcing the Steeler pass on drafting a QB in 2020.

Now, there’s a huge uproar over the supposedly lawless way Ben lost his long locks and bushy beard. Even CNN was in the 'Burgh interviewing Ben’s barber. I mean, give me a break!

Better yet, give one to Big Ben.

Ah, but he might not need it. Because the new-look quarterback, revealed like Snow White showing up at the big ball, appears poised to put all of Pittsburgh on his back and shock the NFL world.

Wouldn’t all those carping critics ready to write off Roethlisberger as washed up and out of shape look super silly -- especially if the Steelers start resembling a team on a Super Bowl run!

Now, that really would be one hell of a makeover, wouldn’t it?

That brings me to the secret significance of Ben’s barbershop duet. For Big Ben, his bushy, Brett Keisel-like beard was a marker of his long recovery road from throwing-elbow surgery after the second game last season.

How bad was his unchecked hair growth? Here’s a reminder (Warning: women and children might want to avert their eyes.)

FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer sparked a big, fat media blow-up over the state of Big Ben’s ample belly. But the state of bushy-bearded, bloated Ben Roethlisberger’s fitness could just be the beginning of the Steelers’ worries in 2020. (Photo via KDKA-TV Pittsburgh)

The fact that Ben’s locks and beard are now nicely trimmed – and so it seems is his body as seen in that slick 38-second video – signals the Steelers’ future Hall of Famer is back.

With everyone from Gov. Tom Wolf on down jumping on Big Ben’s back, Pittsburgh is standing solidly with their star and stalwart passer. In the portion of Pennsylvania known as Steelers Nation, it quickly became Big Ben vs. Big Bad Gov. Wolf.

In western Pa. at least, the outcome was no contest. The hair-brained haircut harangue never had a chance.

Now, the rest of the NFL better beware. Big Ben, the Steelers and its proud legion of fans are freshly groomed and newly united like never before. All it took was one well-time haircut -- and all the hairy criticism it brought.

Get ready for a remade Roethlisberger, all right.

Big Ben could just be better than ever!
