The Chiefs continue to organize their backup quarterback situation.
On Sunday, Kansas City agreed to terms with undrafted rookie Shea Patterson, according to the former Michigan quarterback’s agent, Bryant Ehrlich. The Chiefs released Kyle Shurmur, who bounced between the team and practice squad in 2019, last month and haven’t re-signed last year’s backup Matt Moore.
Ehrlich said that Patterson was “wading through the process… making sure it was a good fit,” per The Detroit News, adding that “it took a little bit longer, but now he’s got a home.”
It’s the Chiefs’ latest QB signing after agreeing to terms with Jordan Ta’amu, who starred for the XFL’s St. Louis BattleHawks last season. Veteran Chad Henne, who recently signed a two-year contract with the team, is expected to be Patrick Mahomes’ main backup but the competition for the veteran is growing.
Patterson and Ta’amu will reunite in Kansas City after serving as teammates in 2017 at Ole miss, before Patterson transferred to Michigan. In four seasons split evenly between Ole Miss and Michigan, Patterson threw for 8,800 yards with 68 touchdown passes and 27 interceptions.
In 2019 for the Wolverines, he threw for 3,061 yards with 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
