New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft is auctioning off one of his six Super Bowl rings to help feed front-line workers and others in need amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Kraft on Sunday announced he’s offering up his Super Bowl 51 ring — the 28-3 comeback against the Atlanta Falcons in 2017 — for the ALL IN Challenge. All of the money raised will go directly to Feeding America, Meals On Wheels, World Central Kitchen and No Kid Hungry.
“I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the front-line health care workers — the doctors, the nurses, the support staff, the EMS people, the intensive care people, and my heart goes out to them all because they’re putting their lives on the line every day,” Kraft said in a video for the ALL IN Challenge.
Kraft said he reflected on the Patriots epic Super Bowl comeback win in 2017.
“And I thought about what’s going on at this time and wanted to give something of extreme value in support of our health care workers,” Kraft said.
“It (the ring) showed how we came back,”Kraft said. “We’re the greatest country in the world, with the greatest people who feel a sense of team and work together in the toughest times. So I want to give this ring to someone who will feel worthy enough to bid it up so that we can get meals to all these people who are hurting badly at this time.”
The starting bid for the ring was $75,000. The bid as of 8 p.m. Sunday was $80,000. The auction will last for 11 days.
The ring features 283 diamonds surrounding the Patriots logo and five Lombardi trophies.
The 5.1 carat-weight ring, crafted with 10-karat white gold, was the largest Super Bowl ring created at the time.
The ALL IN Challenge has raised $38 million so far.
