Eau Claire (WQOW) - Friday, area farmers donated a plethora of pork to a local food bank.

Pallets of pork quickly filled the freezer of Feed My People Food Bank in Eau Claire.

Wisconsin Farmers Union (WFU) and Farmers Union Enterprises (FUE) gave the nonprofit 31,000 pounds of pork ribs.

Officials say that's enough to feed at least 5,000 families.

The pork ribs are from Redwood Farms, which normally supplies premium pork products to high-end restaurants in New York, Chicago, and other cities across the U.S.,  but with many restaurants closed due to COVID-19, WFU officials say donating this food benefits both farmers and families in need.

"With COVID coming in, we clearly have seen restaurants shutting down and things like that happening, so that's impacting some of the meat demand," said Danielle Endvick, communications director with WFU. "What we were seeing is we've had a little bit of extra product, actually kind of a lot there, and we wanted to be able to to make sure that it got to the families who need some, some good protein."

Feed My People Executive Director Emily Moore says a spike in job losses has brought more people to food pantries, including the 'pop up pantries' that they have been holding.

"Pork is such a highly desired product, any protein product really is.  It'll be so appreciated by so many thousands of people," Moore said.

Moore also says they've started serving people who have never used a food pantry before.

FUE plans to donate pork ribs in four other states.
