Rays fall behind early, can’t recover in loss to Twins - Tampa Bay Times

ST. PETERSBURG — The Rays will limp into their most rigorous road trip of the season after Sunday’s 9-3 loss to the Twins before 14,830 fans at Tropicana Field.

Tampa Bay (12-10) was outscored 18-4 over the final two games against Minnesota, while surrendering 27 hits. Dating to Friday, the Rays have just those four runs to show for their last 23 innings.

With a mostly sleepy offense, the Rays’ margin for error evaporated within minutes of Sunday’s first pitch. The Twins scored five first-inning runs off left-hander Josh Fleming (2-3), who has now surrendered 13 runs (eight of them unearned) in his last two outings.

On the game’s third pitch, Rays shortstop Taylor Walls rushed his throw on Byron Buxton’s bouncer and sailed it over the head of first baseman Harold Ramirez for a two-base error. The next three batters also reached — including an RBI single from Kyle Garlick and a two-run double by Jorge Polanco.

The Twins extended their lead to 5-0 on Max Kepler’s RBI double and Gary Sanchez’s run-scoring single. Polanco later added his second two-run double of the game, extending the Twins’ lead to 8-0 in the seventh.

Meanwhile, the Rays couldn’t fight back. They had just one runner in scoring position through the first six innings — 12 of 13 batters were retired at one point — and didn’t score until Walls’ two-out double in the seventh. By then, it was way too late.

The Rays collected a pair of garbage-time runs in the eighth off reliever Cole Sands. Brandon Lowe smacked a one-out, ground-rule double, then scored on Manuel Margot’s seeing-eye single up the middle. Randy Arozarena followed with an RBI double before Sands struck out Josh Lowe and Ramirez.

The Twins got six shutout innings from right-hander Josh Winder (1-0), who allowed two hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.

Fleming wasn’t nearly as efficient, going 3-2/3 innings and being lifted after Buxton’s two-out solo homer in the fourth. Fleming allowed five hits (four in the first inning) and three walks, while striking out one.

Right-hander Robert Dugger, just called up from Triple-A Durham, saved the bullpen by going the final 5-1/3 innings. Dugger allowed three runs and eight hits, but struck out seven and walked no one.

The Rays begin a three-city, 10-game West Coast road trip Monday night in Oakland.
