Yellow Dog Cafe to provide meals for the children on July 12 at the Evans Center

Stuart Borton is calling on one of his restaurant associates to step up and provide the meals for July 20 at Thy Kingdom Come Ministry.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Summer is here and a number of neighborhood grandmothers are making menus and going over supply lists so they can provide free, hot, nutritious meals for south Melbourne’s children.

What’s the toughest part about putting together a summer Read & Feed program?

“Finding sponsors for the food and grocery shopping,” said Dorthy “Dot” Linson as she pulled out packs of hot dog buns, cookies and bottled water for the children.

Linson, along with retired social worker Sandra Price Pelham, have been feeding kids in low-income areas surrounding Melbourne since 2008.

Pelham, whose grassroots vision of helping others has also helped feed and educate countless youth through the Community Youth Read and Feed program over the years.

“A lot of times these kids would go hungry because they are out of school and missing those meals,” Pelham said. “That’s why we’re doing what we can. This is for the children.”

Now the grandmothers are battling inflation, trying to stretch the limited funding they hope to receive to feed and provide books to hungry children over the long summer.

“Food has gone up and we’re trying to do what we can, but we may need to cut out the last week of the program,” Pelham said.

United Way has stepped up to provide free books, Pelham said.

She and the others are working to secure the funding to continue the program from the Palm Bay Police Department, which began in 2008 after several children approached Pelham asking for food.

The program is also partnering with the Evans Center, Scott Chapel United Methodist Church, Thy Kingdom Come ministry and Greater Allen Chapel AME Church.

Sandra Pelham created a program within her own community that helps children receive education and meals during the summer break. She founded the “Community Read and Feed” program for those children that may not have many options in the summertime. The Community Read and Feed Program is a summer program for children who arrive at a facility, read books and are provided a meal.
