CARTHAGE, Ill. (WGEM) -- Food for Thoughts Hancock County is a weekend food pack program for kids in Hancock County who's mission is to keep kids fed over the weekends when school is out and they're asking for your help.

Carthage resident David Dion said he has been giving towards their mission for years.

He said it's important for the community to help where it's needed.

"I know it takes a lot of people, a lot of effort and a lot of time in order to make this work," Dion said.

Volunteer Olivia Clark said their 'You've Been Flocked' fundraiser runs from July 18 to July 31.

She said they place flamingos in your lawn and you're able to make a donation to have the flamingo removed from your yard and moved to a friend's yard.

"Every little bit counts and we hope that we can be a small portion in such a big program and really help make an impact on the kids," Clark said.

Founder Ada Bair said this fundraiser is a way for the community to help feed kids during the school year who don't have enough food.

"If they don't have enough to eat over the weekend, how are they going to do their homework? So, part of this is how do we help to support a student to be the best they can be academically," Bair said.

Bair said it takes $225 dollars to sustain one kid a year and they have about 300 students this year.

She said she has seen how this has touched many students.

"The child actually cried because they didn't have enough food in the home and even that small meal bag makes such a huge difference," Bair said.

Bair said parents are given a paper to fill out at the beginning of the school year if you'd like to join the program.

She said they begin distributing the food packs come September.

You can find ways to give by visiting them on Facebook.
