CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Someone vandalized the Waters Edge Church in Cape Coral and now members are left picking up the pieces.
Shattered glass and graffiti were left behind in the parking lot.
“We’re broken people helping other broken people,” said Pastor Donald Neace. “So for this to happen at the church where the sole intent is to help, it’s just an insult.”
Neace said the congregation was trying to give neighborhood kids a place to play, but vandals threw rocks at the basketball nets and left derogatory messages behind.
“It’s just very hurtful that someone would have this kind of attitude,” said Neace.
Osmani Valdes, a Cape Coral resident who lives near the church, has lived in the area for 17 years. During that time, he said he’s never seen anything like this.
“I see kids all the time playing on the basketball hoop and just for someone to come randomly and mess it up for everyone, I just think it’s horrible,’ said Valdes.
Neace said the vandal caused about $1,200 in damages. The church did file a police report.
Neace said the church will repair the backboard and other damage.
