- Early voting in Louisiana began on Friday, and World Central Kitchen was in New Orleans with Breaking Bad actor Bryan Cranston, feeding people waiting in line to vote. Speaking from Algiers Courthouse (on New Orleans’s West Bank) on Saturday, Cranston said “It’s about feeding people...their minds, their hearts, their bodies,” to the backdrop of the beloved Rebirth Brass Band playing live. Early voting in Louisiana runs through Tuesday, October 27, except on Sundays.
- New Orleans moved into phase 3.2 over the weekend, allowing bars to open outdoor seating and permitting some forms of live music indoors, and once again, photos and videos of crowds in the French Quarter circulated on social media. City officials said on Sunday that they “are monitoring the crowds and addressing issues” and that, “as we continue to get reports of bad actors, our enforcement task force will investigate. Businesses who are found to not comply with the Phase 3.2 guidelines will be met with enforcement action. We cannot go back.” Should phase 3 continue along the plan laid out by the city earlier this month, bars may be allowed to resume indoor seating as early as October 31.
- Admissions for Harrah’s casino in New Orleans for July and August, according to a report from NOLA.com, were less than one third of what they were the year before. Gambling revenue was down 36% from the previous year in July, and about half in August.
- Popeyes is bringing back its Cajun Style Turkeys for Thanksgiving, the New Orleans-born chain just announced. The pre-cooked turkey made with Louisiana-style seasonings will start at $39.99.
- Friday, October 23 is the deadline to apply for a grant from the Lagniappe Krewe Emergency Relief Fund, established by Erich and Jennifer Weishaupt, founders of the Ruby Slipper Café. The one-time, $500 grants are available to hospitality employees and their families who have been affected by the pandemic or Hurricanes Laura or Sally. Apply here. Applications are open for the one-time, $500 grants and are being accepted now through an online application process. Applications can be found at www.lagniappekrewefund.com through Friday, Oct. 23.
