The first Long Beach Challenge online auction was a hit with 273 supporters raising $87,400 to feed elderly people and kids in Long Beach.
Tracy and Mike Murchison, who created the new fundraiser, thanked everyone who bid and donated money that will provide food for the elderly under the Meals on Wheels program and for children under the Long Beach Education Foundation.
The Murchisons also provided these fun facts on the six-week auction:
- Most bid-on item: Party for 20 at Joe Jost’s. Bid on 19 times and sold for $450.
- Seven nights in an A-frame log home in Hawaii sold for $1,400, twice its value. The experience was so popular that the donor allowed it to be auctioned two more times. All three were sold at two times the value within minutes for a total of $4,200, making it the highest bid and the highest over market value.
- Seven packageswere purchased at the “buy now” purchase price, two times the value: a vacation in Hawaii, golf lessons at the Virginia Country Club, dinner for 10 at La Parolaccia Osteria, a six-bottle package from Portuguese Bend Distilling and season tickets to Long Beach State Dirtbags baseball games.
Bill Cruikshank, executive director of Meals on Wheels, said the donations would help meet the increasing demand — up 40 percent due to the COVID-19 pandemic — of home-delivered meals to homebound elderly.
Jill Baker, incoming superintendent of the Long Beach Unified School District, sent a thank you “from the bottom of our hearts to the Murchisons and everyone who donated to this cause.”
