Gail Bichler, creative director: “This week’s issue is inspired by Giovanni Boccaccio’s ‘The Decameron,’ a book of 100 tales processing fear and grief caused by the Black Death of the 14th century. Against the backdrop of the coronavirus, writers from around the world tell stories that help us unpack and understand this moment. The cover is a relief print by Sophy Hollington, who sketched it out on an iPad, then traced and carved it into a sheet of linoleum before inking and transferring it to paper.”
