WATCHUNG, NJ - Need Chicken? Want to help? The call went out and the community responded. In just a few days, 400 families signed up to pick up chicken and donate to the Somerset County Food Bank through Feed to Give.
Feed to Give said:
“Another successful fundraiser! We had over 400 cars pull up today, and we were able to raise $5,352.17 from your generous donations. Today, The Food Bank Network of Somerset County and their associated food banks ordered fresh meat and vegetables to meet their weekly needs; From your donations we were able to provide 4,000 pounds of produce and 2,000 pounds of chicken! With our continuing efforts we will be able to continue fulfilling these weekly orders. We would like to thank the Borough of Watchung Mayor Balla and Council, Watchung Superintendent George Alexis, and the Watchung Board of Education, and Mr. Al Licata and the Bernards Township Regional Chamber of Commerce for supporting our cause. A special thank you to Mrs. Daryl Eisenberg Knegten, a Watchung Council Member, for initiating this event in Watchung, and for making today's fundraiser a success. To all the volunteers: thank you for donating your time and efforts!”
The Borough of Watchung partnered with FEED TO GIVE to offer discounted chicken with all proceeds donated to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County.
In the weeks since the inception of the FEED TO GIVE program, the effort has raised more than $15,000 for Somerset County food banks through fundraisers in Basking Ridge, Warren, and now Watchung. Collaborating with the Bernards Township Regional Chamber of Commerce, a team of local volunteers clad in protective gear place the pre-ordered chicken directly into the back seat or trunks of residents' cars at the pick-up site. Afterwards, the volunteers will deliver any remaining chicken to the food bank, and will continue to deliver chicken on a weekly basis.
"Watchung is thrilled to partner with FEED TO GIVE, which provides a mutual benefit to residents by giving them the opportunity to purchase chicken at low prices while donating all the proceeds to our residents in need," explained Council Member Daryl Eisenberg Knegten.
“This initiative is a win-win for our community," said Council Member Lindsay Goodloe. Thank you to all who participate and to Lawson Foods, Carys, Simon, and Ada Law, and the Bernards Township Regional Chamber of Commerce who brought this excellent program to Somerset County."
In partnership with Lawson Foods, FEED TO GIVE sold discounted chicken breasts at $1.50 a pound. For sale were fresh, uncooked, boneless, skinless chicken breasts packaged in a bulk 10LB bag. They can be frozen for storage. The chicken is hatched, raised, and harvested in the USA by Case Farms. Go to www.casefarms.com to learn more about the farm and their story.
FEED TO GIVE's mission is to provide food for our families, empowering communities to aid local charities and those who rely on them. 100% of the proceeds benefits local charities.
