KAWKAWLIN TWP, MI – Pajot Feed and Supply and an adjoining barber shop were destroyed early Monday morning, May 18, in a fire that drew six fire departments to battle the flames in Kawkawlin, located northwest of Bay City.
The Monitor Township Fire Department responded to the fire at 6 a.m.
The fire originated from Pajot Feed and Supply, located at 100 E. Grove St., and spread to the Great American Man Cave, a barber shop located in front of the granary at 102 S. Huron Road (M-13). State police shut down M-13 and Old Kawkawlin Road.
Michigan State Police Sgt. Harry Rice said Bay County 911 received a call about the fire at the grain shop. Fire departments from Bay City, Kawkawlin, Auburn, Frankenlust and Bangor also came to help put out the fire.
“As of 6 a.m., it was three alarms,” Rice said. “It was fully involved when I arrived. A barber shop up front was also involved in the fire. At this time, I have no information about the cause of the fire.”
Monitor Township Fire Chief John Kramer said Pajot Feed and Supply was an old granary, so the building and grain went up “pretty fast.” The building was not salvageable, but Kramer said they were trying to save the barber shop.
“The barber shop gave us more trouble than the granary,” he said. “We just couldn’t get it out.”
Woodland-Kawkawlin Trailers, located at 112 S. Huron Road, was not severely damaged in the fire. Kramer said the fire departments on scene were able to salvage the building.
“We saved Woodland Trailers – that was a major issue for us,” Kramer said. “Besides some minor damage, everything is good there.”
After putting out the fire, Kramer said their focus is on excavating the site. A fire investigator will examine the scene to determine a cause.
“I don’t have a cause,” Kramer said. “I don’t know how it originated yet.”
No one was hurt in the fire, including firemen who were present when the building collapsed. Monitor Fire Department will remain at the scene and assist the fire investigator.
“We’ll be here a while,” Kramer said. “Everyone’s good -- no one was hurt.”
Michigan State Police will continue diverting traffic off M-13 and Old Kawkawlin until the scene is cleared.
