Keshawn Justice had 23 points and came through for Santa Clara on a series of key plays in the final 18 seconds as the Broncos beat host St. Mary’s 66-64 in the WCC opener for both teams on Saturday.

A dunk by the Gaels’ Mattias Tass with 22 seconds left snapped a 62-all tie, but Justice gave the Broncos the lead at 65-64 on a 3-pointer four seconds later by connecting from the right wing off a feed from Christian Carlyle.

Justice then blocked Tommy Kuhse’s shot and grabbed the rebound with a second left. Kuhse fouled Justice, who made the second of two free throws with 0.5 of a second left, and St. Mary’s failed to get a last shot off before the buzzer.

Justice, who was just 2-for-15 from the field in the previous two games, went 8-for-12, including 3-for-4 from behind the 3-point line.

Josip Vrankic had 11 points and eight rebounds for Santa Clara (7-2). Guglielmo Caruso added 10 points.

Logan Johnson scored a career-high 26 points for the Gaels (9-3). Kuhse added 12 points. Matthias Tass had 11 rebounds.

USC 73, Arizona State 64: Freshman Evan Mobley had 10 points and 13 rebounds and the Trojans, who beat Arizona 87-73 on Thursday, swept their road trip through the desert for the first time since the 1984-85 season. The 7-foot Mobley, a likely top-5 pick in the 2021 NBA draft, was 5-for-7 shooting and had six blocks. Tahj Eaddy scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half and grabbed nine rebounds and Isaiah Mobley — Evan’s older brother — added 13 points and 10 rebounds for USC (8-2, 3-1 Pac-12). The Sun Devils (4-5, 1-2) were without guards Remy Martin and Jaelen House as well as forwards Jalen Graham and Taeshon Cherry for the second consecutive game, for various reasons. Martin is in coronavirus protocol after missing the UCLA game to attend his grandfather’s funeral.

UCLA 81, Arizona 76: Tyger Campbell scored 22 points, Johnny Juzang added 16 and the visiting Bruins (9-2, 5-0 Pac-12) completed a sweep of the Pac-12’s desert schools. #22 Virginia 61, Boston College 49: Jay Huff had 18 points and eight rebounds and Sam Hauser scored 17 with 10 boards to help the visiting Cavaliers (6-2, 3-0 ACC) beat the Eagles (2-9, 0-5).

Women

UConn coach

ties Summitt

Freshman Paige Bueckers scored 23 points and No. 3 UConn overcame a sluggish start to rout visiting Providence 87-50 to give Geno Auriemma his 1,098th win.

That ties the late Tennessee coach Pat Summitt for the second most wins in Division I women’s basketball history behind Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer (1,104).

“Right now the only number that matters to me is 13,” Auriemma said. “We’ve got to get to 13 games so that we can qualify for the NCAA Tournament. The other stuff, I would like to think that if you’ve done something for 37 years, whatever, that you’re going to have some milestones, and if you’re fortunate enough you have some pretty important milestones.”

USF 73, St. Mary’s 56: Lucie Hoskova scored 32 points, Ioanna Krimili had 12 and Jessica McDowell-White 10 as the Dons (5-6, 1-4 WCC) beat the host Gaels (2-9, 0-5). Ellie Croco scored 12 points to lead St. Mary’s.

Santa Clara 77, Pacific 74: Lindsey VanAllen had 25 points and nine rebounds for the Broncos (7-4, 3-2) in their win in Stockton. Valerie Higgins led the Tigers (4-3, 2-2) with 17 points and nine rebounds.
