Looking to get rid of your Christmas tree but don’t have the heart to see it next to your trash cans? Well, this one Pennsylvanian farm has a solution for that.
CBS Pittsburgh reports that Potential Farm in Presto, Pa., is willing to take that ol’ Tannenbaum off your hands in order to feed their goats.
According to one farmer, the pine needles of Christmas trees house healthy nutrients and vitamins such as vitamin A and vitamin C, giving the goats a boost to their immune system and serving as a natural way for them to get rid of worms. Plus, it’s a nice object for the goats to play with during the winter.
It’s certainly a healthier menu option for goats, who can essentially eat anything that’s placed in front of them.
But Potential Farm isn’t the only one accepting recycled Christmas trees as treats for their goats. Many farms across the country are picking up the trend, also serving the trees to other animals such as sheep.
Fox 17 News describes how Lewis Adventure Farm and Zoo in New Era, Mich., has made the practice a tradition over the past 15 years.
“Animals get the winter blues kind of, too, so they like anything new and unusual,” says brand ambassador at Lewis, Jenny Ferels. “It’s exciting for them.”
According to some farmers, goats may even have specific preferences as to which trees they’d like to eat. Tish Vadnais, co-owner of Homestead Farm in Rehoboth, Mass., tells WJAR that many prefer moist bark over dry.
“They eat it right down to the bark,” she states.
All ornaments, tinsel, and other decorations must be removed from trees prior to donation.
